| Floating Ecopolis for Climate RefugeesPhilippe SteelsVincent Callebaut
In 2000, Vincent Callebaut, 23 years old, graduated with the Great Architecture Prize René Serrure awarding the best diploma project at the Institute Victor Horta in Brussels for its Parisian project Metamuseum of Arts and Civilisations Quay Branly.
Then, thanks to the bursary Leonardo da Vinci attributed by the European Community, he decided to live in Paris to extend its critical thinking and its spatial inventiveness during two years of internship in agencies that fascinate him (Odile Decq Benoit Cornette Architectes Urbanistes, Massimiliano Fuksas).
In 2001, he competed in box and won the Grand Architecture Prize Napoléon Godecharle of the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts of Brussels awarding the best hope of the Belgian architecture with its ecological project Elasticity, an aquatic city of 50 000 inhabitants entirely autonomous.
The jury appreciated at the same time his dynamism, his expression force and the coherence of his concept, and recognised a personality endowed with a remarkable aptitude giving well-founded expectations of great success and able thus to contribute to the fact that reputation of Belgium becomes a truth.
In 2005, he was the finalist of the RE-New Architecture Pleasures awarding the 12 best figures of the Architecture in the French Community of Belgium. During the same year, the Edition Company Damdi of Seoul dedicated him at the age of 28 its first architecture monograph detailing the story of its awarded and exhibited projects during worldwide spontaneous proposals and international competitions.
Since then, in the framework of his agency and great collaborations (Jakob+MacFarlane, Claude Vasconi, Jacques Rougerie), he militates continuously for the long lasting development of the new Ecopolis via parasitical strategies for an investigation architecture mixing biology to information and communication technologies
From New York to Hong Kong crossing Brussels and Paris, Vincent Callebaut proposes with determination and conviction prospective and ecological projects by insufflating locally dialogs and meetings that try to raise our questionings on the society in which we live as citizen of a global world!

| Architect proposes
900-foot-tall 'Sky Garden' condo for New York CityEco Factor: 54-story skyscraper adorned with sky gardens. Architect Daniel Libeskind has proposed a 900-foot-tall skyscraper for New York City, which stands out from the crowd of even taller skyscrapers by including a series of sky gardens at different levels of the building. The design also showcases a glass-tube-enclosed vertical garden going the full length of the tower through its center. Apart from giving fresh air to the people living or working in the tower, the open spaces designed for the sky gardens and the vertical farm will also ensure maximum utilization of the natural lighting, which would reduce the energy requirements of the building. The design has not yet been approved, but will definitely improve New York’s skyline if it is actually built. The Dark Side: The open spaces would ensure maximum energy savings when it comes to energy required for lighting this sky scraper, but it will also reduce the temperature inside the building, especially after sunset. To maintain comfortable living conditions inside the building, heating systems would have to be used, which would require much more energy than what would actually be saved by letting in the daylight. | Rain collector skyscraperPolish architectural students ryszard rychlicki and agnieszka nowak of H3AR received a special mention for their proposal in the 2010 skyscraper competition. 'capture the rain' skyscraper is a building whose roof and external shell, which consists systems of gutters, are aimed at capturing as much rainfall as possible to meet the daily needs of its inhabitants. average daily consumption of water per person is 150 liters, out of which 85 liters may be replaced by rain water. within the last thirty years water consumption has significantly increased. there are lots of factors that contribute to such an increase such as increasing number washing machines and dish washers, increasing popularity of garden showering devices and flushing toilets. a third of water being used in households in western countries is flushed in toilets. since 1900 the total water consumption in the US has increased by 1000%. at present, an average american uses five times more water that a citizen of developing countries. such an increase is related to among others improved living standards. on the other hand, a national hobby of the danes is collecting rain water for washing and watering plants. within the last ten years average use of pure water in denmark dropped by 40% and inhabitants of the so called eco-villages use a third part of the national average.

| 'capture the rain' skyscraper by ryszard rychlicki and agnieszka nowak
In view of this data, they decided to design a tower, whose structure will allow for capturing and processing as much rainfall as possible to provide with water for its inhabitants. millennia plants have been developing systems of capturing and processing rainfall. such systems helped them to deal with water deficits or surpluses. similarly, they wanted to copy their simple mechanisms of rainfall capturing and processing. initially, in designing the tower, we focused at shaping and modeling the surface of the roof to capture as much rainfall as possible. under a roof's surface, there are water reservoirs in the form of a large funnel and reed fields, which serve as a hydro botanic water treatment unit. the unit processes water into usable water that is further transmitted to apartments. a network of gutters on the external surfaces of the building is designed to capture rainfall flowing down the building. such flowing rainfall is transmitted to floors and its surplus is stored in a reservoir under the building. water captured and processed by the building may be used for flushing toilets, feeding washing machines, watering plants, cleaning floors and other domestic applications. having analyzed rainfall in several large cities in developed countries, we obtained a formula that shows what percentage of daily pure water consumption may be replaced with rainfall thanks to the technology applied in their building.

| Eco ArchitectureSun Wall will produce 200 kw of energy Eco Factor: Wall will harness solar energy to generate electricity. The AIA-sponsored and funded photovoltaic “Sun Wall” project at the Department of Energy’s Washington, DC, headquarters would generate 200 kW of electricity and would be the largest building-integrated solar energy system on any federal building in the U.S. The design also includes a solar thermal installation for hot water along with PV panels. It was one of the winning designs of “sun wall” competition that was organized in order to show how elements of current technology can can be added to increase the sustainability of buildings. The project was created by SCB in partnership with ARUP New York. The Dark Side: The area required for the construction of such a huge structure and the cost is not defined. Therefore, nothing can be said about that. Furthermore, the possibility to include other sources to harness natural energy is still there. Via: SCB | |

| Ecological tower in Khanty Mansyisk, SiberiaOnce again raising the bar on avant-garde green architectural icons in the furthest corners of the world, Sir Norman Foster has just revealed his designs for a new ecological tower in Khanty Mansyisk, Siberia. Similar to his entertainment center in Kazakhstan, the stunning tower will combine a cloud-piercing aesthetic with mixed-use functions and some of the most cutting-edge green building technologies. The tower will provide a location for living, working, and leisure, designed sustainably to minimize site impact and be sensitive to the harsh Siberian climate. Never one to sacrifice aesthetics for function, Foster has cladded the 280-meter tower in faceted glass to maximize daylight through the winter months while reflecting natural light to illuminate the interior spaces. In terms of green features, the tower centers around a South-facing atrium, which maximizes daylight and solar gain, minimizing the need for artificial lighting and providing insulation during the colder months. The structure will also rest lightly on the land and rely on renewable energy sources. Space for residential, office, hotel, and retail programs will be integrated, topped off by a dramatic viewing platform and restaurant at the tower’s summit. | |

| The Future of Green Architecture: A Floating Museum ] Physalia A museum, nightclub and filtration system, Physalia uses its hull and rooftop plants to scrub away pollution. Courtesy Vincent Callebaut Architecture Physalia is half-boat, half-building, and all green. This mammoth aluminum concept by Belgian architect Vincent Callebaut is meant to travel Europe’s rivers, making filthy water drinkable. At the same time, the ship generates more energy than it uses. A coat of titanium dioxide paint brushed onto the silvery shell will neutralize pollution by absorbing ultraviolet rays, enabling a chemical reaction that decomposes organic and inorganic toxins. (It’s the same technology used in certain high-tech concrete that breaks down airborne particulates.) As the vessel whips along, purifying waterways, it can draw on both solar and hydro power. Turbines under the hull transform water movement into electricity, and rooftop photovoltaic cells harness energy from the sun. The roof doubles as a nursery, whose carefully selected plants help filter river gunk, whether from the Thames, Rhine or Euphrates. But Physalia isn’t just designed to be a working ship. The vessel will also be a floating museum of sorts. Scientists who study aquatic ecosystems can hole up in the dedicated “Earth garden” lab, and tourists can visit temporary exhibits in a “water garden” or settle into a submerged lounge that could easily pass for a London nightclub. Callebaut, 33, dreamed up the idea after last year’s United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen shone a long-overdue spotlight on global water issues. He has some lofty terms for his project: It’s a “nomadic hydrodynamic laboratory,” a “fragment of living earth,” and a “floating agora” on a “geopolitical scale.” Others might just call it a cool idea. | |

| The Zero-Emissions Dice HouseRoll the Dice The building’s designer, Sybarite, hopes to make its design the standard for zero-emissions homes. Courtesy Sybarite House The Dice House looks like part of a Monopoly set, but the design has real-world ambitions. The 30-by-30-by-30-foot concept home, designed by the British architecture firm Sybarite, improves on standard building tech to erase its carbon footprint. The centerpiece is a photovoltaic umbrella dome that collects roughly 90 percent of the house’s energy needs. Made of a common plastic, the pillowy dome traps heat like a greenhouse. That hot air warms water in a tank tucked under the roof, turning out a daily average of 80 bath-ready gallons, even on the darkest days of December. At the umbrella’s apex, a generator-equipped turbine produces electricity and, in chilly months, drives heat into the house. Photovoltaic cells studding the 484-square-foot dome floor create additional electricity. Generating an estimated average of 33 kilowatt-hours per day, the house can power itself and charge a Tesla Roadster. And the building, submitted for a carbon-neutral housing competition, manages to stay comfortable year-round without air conditioning. The roof is covered in plants under the dome. Walls made of structural board stabilize temperatures. Windows circumscribed by a big dot—the “one” side of the die—absorb light from the sun-drenched south. And the compact footprint means less space to heat and cool. | |

| A Live-In Power PlantDubai's 10MW Tower Courtesy Robert Ferry/Studied Impact Design At first glance, the plans for the 10MW Tower have all the trappings of pre-crash Dubai: the improbable height, the flashy facade, the swagger of a newbie in a crowded skyline. On closer inspection, however, it’s an eco-machine. The A-shaped, 1,969-foot concept skyscraper is designed to turn out as much as 10 times the energy it needs, enough to power up to 4,000 nearby homes. This concept skyscraper could generate enough energy to power 4,000 homes Three separate systems make it work. First, a five-megawatt wind turbine in the hollow of the “A” generates energy in the powerful and unpredictable desert gusts. Second, mirrors dot the slanted, south-facing facade, beaming light to a molten-salt-filled collector that hangs off the building like an ultra-tall street lamp. Cooked to 932ºF, the liquefied salt transfers heat to a convection loop that runs a three-megawatt steam turbine. Finally, a two-megawatt solar updraft tower produces additional energy in clear weather. Sunlight warms air in a two-foot-wide gap that runs the length of the southern face. The airflow from rising heat powers an internal wind turbine. If it were built (at an estimated cost of $400 million), 10MW could pay off its energy debt in 20 years. Extra juice feeds the municipal grid, and other sources in the area would adjust for the tower’s output. Thebuilding could house offices or residences or both, says designer Robert Ferry, 35, who helms the Dubai architecture firm Studied Impact with his wife, Elizabeth Monoian. The pair became interested in energy-generating skyscrapers on moving to the United Arab Emirates, where there are superstructures in spades but few that are any greener than their brochures. With the 10MW Tower, they hope to someday create a power plant you can live in. It may sound fantastic, but, Ferry says, “it’s only a matter of time before something like this is built.” | |
