| Joe BergeronEnceladus Enceladus, one of Saturn's many icy moons, is now known to possess underground reservoirs of liquid water which sometimes erupt to the surface in the form of great jets or geysers. These keep the moon's surface sparkling white, and even add material to Saturn's rings.

| Joe BergeronSaturn's Navel The mighty Cassini orbiter has discovered a colossal, deep, whirling storm at the south pole of Saturn. The walls of the vortex appear smooth because of the speed of the rotation. The lightning is a guess on my part. | |

| Joe BergeronSaturn Atmosphere Probe Many years ago I did a painting of the rings of Saturn as seen from the planet's upper cloud decks. I decided to see what I could do with a digital version. To see the rings this open, you would have to be far north or south of the planet's equator. They are backlit, and so look a little peculiar. I added the probe to provide a visual focal point. | |

| Christian JooreEmbedded within the polar cap of Saturn’s swirling circular clouds and churning convection cells is a very large and very strange geometric vortex. Like a mystical symbol left behind by an alien civilization, this bizarre structure is unlike anything seen in our solar system. 300 mile per hour winds roil around the distinctive hexagon formation, navigating 60 degree corners as if possessed by a strange force. Ice Halos are an atmospheric phenomena caused by the refraction of light through ice crystals in the atmosphere. Halos can also be seen on Earth, however they may appear differently due to the specific atmospheric conditions on this planet. I realize this one lacks any artistic flare but it may appeal to some of us who prefer a more factual perspective, besides it’s nice to be reminded of our place in the galaxy once in a while. Our Milky Way galaxy is part of a group of galaxy’s named the ‘Local Group’. Of its 30 members the Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy are two of the largest and are predicted to collide about 3 billion years from now. This illustration shows two galaxies colliding. The ‘edge-on’ spiral galaxy shows its central plane beginning to twist under the gravitational influence of its disruptive companion. Because of the vast distances between stars very few with collide with each other during this union. | |
