The Plans for the 1.55-Mile-High Skyscraper in, You Guessed It, Dubai

Forget the 3,280 feet-high 200-floor Nakheel Tower because it's no longer going to be the highest skyscraper in the world.

The new upcoming beast is this amazing 1.55-mile-high skyscraper planned for the Jumeirah City project in Dubai.

The building is so tall that its main elevator is in fact a vertical 125mph bullet train.
This city-in-a-skyscraper will consume 37,000MWH/year, with a 15MW peak usage, but as the plans show, it has been designed to generate most of it using wind, thermal, and solar power:

OQYANA is an archipelago of artificial islands which make up the Australasian continent and the New Zealand islands of The World development, off the coast of Dubai.

The islands were purchased by The Investment Dar (a company based in Kuwait) and EFAD Holdings.

The islands were first purchased in 2005 and are being created as a lifestyle destination and community with approximately 2,000 apartments, 200 villas and luxury hotels.

Features of the development include a cultural centre for performing arts, a conference centre, leisure facilities, restaurants, cafes and island lifestyle specific retail.

Derived from the Arabic word “Oceanic”, OQYANA World First is surrounded by sea, a domain set against the breathtaking Dubai skyline.

The islands were selected as they are one of the closest group of islands from Dubai, and also have the best view of the city.

OQYANA WORLD FIRST is located 4 km from the coastline of Dubai and will occupy a total area of 1.87 million square meters (20 million square feet) and a total upland area of 417 thousand square meters (4.5 million square feet). It will contain 17 kilometres (10.5 miles) of inter-linked walkways, 15,000 meters (50,000 ft) of shore front and a marina with over 1,500 private yacht berths.

The islands are planned to be terraformed by the developers, meeting the investors specifications.

The land is planned to be handed over in the third quarter of 2008 by the developer, Nakheel, with construction starting in late 2008 or early 2009.

The Water Discus hotels

The Water Discus hotels have been designed to consist of two, disc-like compartments. One lies deep, beneath the water’s surface, while the other one is above. The parts are connected by three legs and a central, vertical compartment that houses both an elevator and a stairway. The submerged disc is located 10 meters beneath the surface and holds 21 suites that each feature the most beautiful ocean views. The resort will also include a restaurant, a spa, and an impressive indoor swimming pool that cuts through the center of the disc.

A salt water training pool will be situated above the water while incredible glass-walled tunnels, made for divers, will dice through the indoor pool. An exotic botanical garden will provide a rejuvenating place to relax after swimming in the pool or enjoying the day's activites. All of the guests at the Water Discus resorts will have the opportunity to not only enjoy the sea from their rooms, but get up close and personal with invitation to board one of the hotel’s three-passenger submersible vehicles. Diving courses and submersible piloting courses will also be available.
